New Directions Scarf

It’s time for my favourite season of the year! With that, of course comes, all the beautiful scarves. The pattern I am sharing with you today is actually one of the very first patterns I wrote. This scarf has always been a hit with all my customers but I have never gotten around to writing down the pattern.

Sneaky Embroidery

Embroidered Roses 

This is my second square for the In Bloom Blanket CAL. Today I chose to use a mix of crochet and embroidery. I love doing crossover projects and the best part of this is the embroidery is so simple you do not need to be an expert sewer to make these roses!

Supplies

This pattern uses Mighty Stitch which was generously donated by WeCrochet to each of the designers in the In Bloom CAL

For this square you will need the colours;
Alfalfa, Cream, Mulberry and Sky
Hook: 4mm
Notions: Yarn needle, stitch marker, measuring tape, scissors.

Gauge
4×4’ = 19 stitches by 20 rows of sc.

Abbreviations
Ch. Chain
Dc. Double crochet
Sc. Single crochet
St. Stitch

Set up

To make main square.
In Cream Ch 36. Turn.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, sc 4, *dc 5, sc 5*. Repeat * across. Ch3, turn (36sts).
Row 2: Skip first sc, dc 4, *sc 5, dc 5*. Repeat * across. Ch 1, turn (36sts).
Row 3: Sc 5 * dc 5, sc 5*. Repeat * across. Ch 3, turn (36sts).
Row 4-30: Repeat rows 2-3 until you reach row 30.
Finish leaving a long tail. Weave in ends.

To Add Roses.
For the roses we are incorporating an embroidery technique. You can add as many or a few roses to the square as you like. I chose to add 5 to my square.
Step 1: Create a star shape using 5 straight stitches, I made mine roughly 1 inch each, if you want smaller roses make these stitches shorter. Using a contrasting colour of yarn (this makes it easier to see where you are weaving in the next step).
Step 2: Using your main colour for your rose, thread a yarn needle with a generous amount of yarn. Start by weaving under your first stitch, then over the second. Continue this around the 5 stitches.
Step 3: Continue weaving under and over each consecutive stitch until your rose is nice and full and the guide stitches are covered.
Step 4: Finish off by stitching under the rose a couple of times and cut yarn.
Adding Leaves


Using Alfalfa attach yarn to square as close to the edge of the rose using a surface sc. Surface Sc 3 more times. Ch 1, turn, going down one side of the previous sc, sc, dc, hdc, sc in each sc across. Slip st into main square, cut yarn and weave in ends.
In my example I have shown what it looks like to have two leaves on each rose, one leaf or non. I personally prefer the one leaf, but this is completely customizable.

Make Blue bells
Make a Magic Circle, Ch 1, 6sc in the ring. Pull tight to close. DO NOT SLIP STITCH TO FINISH.
Row 1: sc in each st across (6sts).
Row 2: sc in each st across (6sts).
Row 3: sc in each st across (6sts).
Row 4: sc in each st across (6sts).
Row 5: 2 sc in each st across (12sts).
Row 6: *4sc in next st, ss in next*. Repeat * across. (30sts).
Tie off leaving a long tail, this is to be able to stitch onto your main square. I made a total of 3 bluebells, but you could make up to 6 to attach onto the main square.

Attaching your bluebells.

Using long tail sew the ends through the square near the colour 2 portion of the design. This gives the appearance that the bluebells are dangling off the main stalk. Repeat across for each bluebell, sew in ends and cut to finish.

Patchwork Messenger Bag Review

The lovely Amanda of Crafty Barista Crochet let me test her Patchwork Messenger Bag pattern before release. It was my first time fully committing to making a crochet bag because I always worry about the sturdiness of the bag, risk of stretch and generally the gaps and holes that are associated with crochet. I can say that this bag does not have those problems. The combination of different surface stitches and textures gives this pattern a lovely aesthetic which does not contain any holes! The risk of stretching can also be combated with shortening the bag strap, making those stitches tighter or by adding a lining. I will be later adding a lining to allow the bag to be safe in those sudden April Showers.

I learnt a few lessons during this pattern test. The first lesson I learnt here was colour choice is just as important as fiber choice. As you can see in the picture above using black yarn may give an overall feel to the bag and may work with the whole colour scheme, but it does not do justice to the stitch definition. Because of this I chose to do the panels in a different set up on the other side of the bag. Switching the black out for the navy just gave a little more depth to the stitch, allowing you to see the design more clearly.

The second lesson is yarn choice. The pattern Recommends Caron Simply Soft, which although you can use comparable yarns, I think a pattern such as this should use the yarn it was made for. If you do use a comparable yarn however, it is definitely important that you choose something which will; a, be sturdy enough to hold a tight structure, and b, not over textured (fluffy or loopy, like an eyelash yarn) to help you show through those stitches. To recreate the combination I made I used Caron Simply Soft in the colours, Black, Dark Country Blue and Country Blue Ombre.

The thing I loved about this bag is that although it looks super complicated it really is not. If anyone else is like me and HATES seaming garments together or just dreads the sewing in ends aspect it really isn’t as much as it seems. It is made from very simple construction and only requires beginners stitching skills.

Sampler Scarf Tester Call

Tester Call

Hi everyone. I have a gorgeous new project for everyone to work on. Here is the Sampler Scarf. I am looking for people who would like to test this simple scarf pattern I have been creating to teach a class. The scarf starts with the simplest of stitches and becomes a little more complex as it goes on.

For testing this scarf you will get a free copy of the finished PDF file and the knowledge you helped in the teaching of the next generation of Crocheters!

Requirements:

I am looking for people willing to supply their own yarn. The pictured test scarf was made using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Burgundy and Saffron. It can be made in any equivalent worsted weight yarn, or DK for a lighter airier feel. I recommend Paintbox yarns DK Cotton or Debbie Bliss Cotton DK

All testers will need a public Instagram account and the ability to add to Ravelry as a project after completing the test.

Spring has Sprung!

I am so eager for Spring to come! Although the season has technically already changed, I am still getting used to living in New York and dealing with Spring mornings STILL being below freezing. But sitting in my office room feeling the heat of the sun from behind closed doors is good enough for me!

With my aforementioned anticipation, I have started on making lighter projects. As said before, I like making things year round and really don’t see my hobby as a Winter-only past time. There are so many options out there now for lightweight yarns that there is no reason to put away your hooks once the weather gets warmer!

My first Spring project has been testing the gorgeous Athens Infinity Scarf for Miranda of I Don’t Give a Knit


For this project I used Caron Simply Soft in Soft Green. This is the first time I have used this yarn and I am really impressed. The colour is perfect for making any outfit look good for spring, with the slight shine to the yarn itself helping to give more depth to the colour.

The detail of the stitches leaves a lovely airy feel to the piece. And the drape on this is gorgeous. In her pattern are easy to follow instructions for each of the stitches used so there is none of that annoying googling each stitch to find a Youtube video just to get started!


The pattern itself is very easy to follow and I completed it in roughly 3 hours since I had quite a few breaks between. It was super easy to pick up and leave off as the repeat is fairly recognisable and allows you to jump back in whenever needed. Another great spring/ summery yarn for this pattern would be to use Paintbox yarns DK cotton. It would make the scarf a little airier and perfect for warmer weather.
